Insolvency Partner

As a business recovery partner in the London office of Mercer & Hole, Chris acts for management, creditors and other stakeholders, adding value to financially troubled enterprises of all sizes, from small privately owned businesses to listed international groups. His approach is to work with the key stakeholders to solve business recovery problems with practical action and advice, seeking to avoid insolvency procedures where possible but taking formal UK insolvency appointments when necessary.

Having particular knowledge and experience of European recovery practices and insolvency regimes, including the European Insolvency Regulation, Chris is one of a very small number of UK insolvency practitioners who are well-positioned to bridge the frequently encountered gulf in understanding and expectations between stakeholders from different jurisdictions in cross-border business recovery cases. He has particularly strong connections with good, independent insolvency practitioners in other countries (in most of which the IPs operate within boutique practices rather than in general legal or accounting firms).

Chris has acted in a huge range of debtor-led and creditor-led recoveries in the UK and internationally, in addition to pre-funding reviews for lenders and investors, in industry sectors including retail, manufacturing, motor trade, utilities, engineering, printing, wholesale and distribution, leisure, travel, professional practices, property, construction and contracting, charities and not-for-profit organisations such as housing associations and schools, recruitment, media, dot-coms and telecoms businesses. He also has particular expertise in both solvent corporate restructuring, including s110 schemes, and pensions restructuring, advising corporates and trustees and if necessary acting as the insolvency practitioner for companies whose pension schemes are to enter the Pension Protection Fund or be subject to an approved compromise.

Chris is the editor of Recovery, the quarterly journal of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3); a Council member of INSOL Europe; joint chief editor of Eurofenix, INSOL Europe’s quarterly journal; chairman of the Case Register Committee of INSOL Europe, which publishes the definitive online source for European Insolvency Regulation judgements and commentaries; director of INSOL Europe’s website; an Advisory Board Member of Global Insolvency, a joint knowledge project of INSOL International and the American Bankruptcy Institute; a regular speaker on recovery issues at R3, INSOL Europe and other conferences; and he blogs on our Insolvency Blog

Always based in London, Chris has been working full time in business recovery since 1983 when he qualified as a chartered accountant, becoming a licensed insolvency practitioner in 1987. He joined Mercer & Hole in 2004. Married with two children, Chris devotes his leisure time to his family.
